With a New Year comes new hope and prayer for a Blessed year ahead so our first tour of the year will focus on those of the area who through faith have faced life’s challenges. Our morning will begin with a visit to the Academy of Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau which is currently the oldest Sacred Heart Academy in the United States. Our tour will tell it’s story dating back over 200-year-old from its construction to today with notable chapters in its history including one notable chapter of the 1866 Miracle of St. John Berchman.
Continuing with our Faithful journey our next visit will be to yet another place where Catholic nuns we intricate in shaping the lives of children with our visit to the Louisiana Orphan Train museum. During the years between 1854 and 1929 thousands of homeless and abandoned children from the New York area were put on trains set out for rural America to find homes. Through displays of stories and collections you will be able to understand how over 2,000 of these children became not only a large part of our local society but also a part of our culture.
This afternoon we continue our travels through the rural upper part of Acadiana making our way to Richard, Louisiana which is the home of the “Cajun Saint” Charlene Richard. Today on which would have been her 80th Birthday we will be told the story of this truly Faithful child of Christ and how even when faced with a painful illness she kept her faith offering up her suffering for the salvation of others. Even after her death in 1959 many have prayed in devotion to her resulting in numerous stories of her intercession leading to a booklet being released in 1979 and once again in 1988 with additional testimonies. Though she may have had a short life here on earth her legacy will live on in the hearts of so many for generations to come.
