This Fall Tour has been one that I’ve been working on for a while and will have almost something for everyone. For this one it also has some bonuses as it’s only seven days and even includes 3 nights in one city. Over the years depending on mother nature Kentucky can have some very nice autumn fall foliage also.
DAY ONE (D1: L, KB) will be a travel day making our way across Louisiana, Mississippi and into Alabama for our first night’s stay.
DAY TWO will be a travel day also making miles north playing games and passing the time. Around lunch time we reach the Nashville area making a stop at Belle Meade Plantation for lunch and a tour of the home and grounds. Kicking off this Sippin’ N Saddles Tour we enjoy lunch in the stable followed by our first Bourbon tasting of the tour. We then hit the road again making it to Louisville which will be our home for the next three nights. After a long day and loosing an hour I’ll have dinner delivered to the hotel so we can unpack and relax and prepare for the next day. B,L,KB
This morning we enjoy a morning without rushing or luggage with a little bit later departure. We begin DAY THREE with a visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum located at Churchill Downs. Labeled as the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” the museum celebrates the tradition, history and pageantry of the race with a vast collection of everything from saddles, trophies and yes even those colorful creative hats and outfits. After walking through the Grandstand area down to the track explaining the feeling of race day. Following the track tour we’ll enjoy a typical Kentucky lunch at the before our next activity.
To get the true feeling of the Kentucky Derby our next activity will be fun as we participate in “Hatitude” which we will all be able to make our very own derby day style hat. Keeping with the theme of the tour we complete our visit with a derby favorite sippin’ on their signature Mint Julep. The next favorite is a visit to a place which plays a big role in America’s favorite past time of baseball with a visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum. Before entering be sure to get your picture with the 120 ft. bat at the entrance, once inside you’ll have the opportunity to relive some of baseball's greatest moments. To get a better understanding of the care and precision that goes into making these bats the staff will take us on a behind the scenes factory tour seeing how simple lumber pieces are turned into masterpieces of their sport. At the completion of the tour “Swing into the Fun with a Swig” with another Bourbon tasting at Bourbon & Bats. With such a busy day we take a short break a the hotel before heading over to dinner. Dinner tonight will be not only Kentucky Favorite but a Louisville special with a dinner show at the Derby Playhouse. The actual show hasn’t been announced yet but all are always an enjoyable dining experience. (D3: B,L,D)
It’s now DAY FOUR and we’ve got more planned for today making the drive to Louisville’s MEGA Caverns for guided tour of this magnificent man made creation. These caverns which construction ranging from the 1930s to the 1970s covering over 100 acres stretching under home, freeways and even under the Louisville Zoo. At Four Million square feet is considered the largest building in the state of Kentucky. Beginning as a limestone mining facility and later designated as a nuclear shelter today continues not only as tourist attraction but also staying at continuous 58 degrees also operates as a private storage facility for all sorts of valuable some of which are highly classified.
After the tour we head over to the “Bourbon Capital of the World” Bardstown, Kentucky. Starting our visit to Bardstown we enjoy a traditional homecooked meal before visiting the Bourbon Museum. This afternoon we’ll make our way along the Bourbon trail with Bourbon Tasting at two of the local distilleries. Continuing our Kentucky Favorites dinner tonight will be at the Claudia Sanders dinner house. The Sanders family known for their famous fried chicken special recipe leading to the creation the KFC / Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, has become known and enjoyed by many around the world . After three nights in Louisville, we pack up on DAY FIVE to our next destination. About an hour drive east brings us to Lexington, KY which will spend this morning at the Kentucky Horse Park. Covering over 1,200 acres, this premier working farm which began in 1978 is the home of the International Museum of the Horse. Starting our visit with a carriage tour we learn the history of the farm while getting a chance to see the all the areas such as the arenas, activity & training areas and barns including the massive 460 ft BIG BARN. Our visit includes opportunities for meet and greets with various horses such as the Kentucky Horse Park mounted police force and the Hall of Champions which are retired racing legends. Before lunch we’ll take in the Equine Showcase which is a vibrant celebration of horse breeds as costumed riders present their horses telling of their origins. After the show get up close to the rail for some fantastic photos’ opportunities. As you enjoy your time here be sure to take note of the numerous statues throughout the park marking the final resting place of many famous horses through history. Today we end the day back into Tennessee with an overnight stay in Knoxville. (D6: B,L,KB)
If timing is right with the fall colors we continue on DAY SIX with the scenic drive through the Tennessee hills towards Chattanooga. After lunch we get a bird’s eye view of the geographical landscape of the area with a ride on the Chattanooga Incline Railway. Often called “America’s Most Amazing Mile” features a breathtaking steep journey to the top of Lookout Mountain. Once at the top enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Chattanooga Skyline and Tennessee Mountains. Tonight we are closer to home with a stay in Birmingham, AL (D6: B,L,KB)
DAY SEVEN Our last day and final day we begin to see sights familiar with us making our way through Alabama and Mississippi and into our home state of Louisiana!
